Follow these steps:
1 – Write four distinctive rhythmic phrases
2 – apply pitches to the rhythms (may either be pandiatonic or serial dodecaphonic)
3 – put the four phrases together to form a coherent theme (minor edits may be made to make the phrases “flow” better)
Choose the order in which you’d like to do these:
-keep the pitches, apply new rhythms
-keep the rhythms, apply new pitches
You now have a theme with two basic variations. Find two other ways in which you could vary your theme.
Expansion: harmonize your melodic materials and score for an ensemble of your choosing.
