Today’s Composer Prompt (Theme and Variations)

Follow these steps:

1 – Write four distinctive rhythmic phrases

2 – apply pitches to the rhythms (may either be pandiatonic or serial dodecaphonic)

3 – put the four phrases together to form a coherent theme (minor edits may be made to make the phrases “flow” better)

Choose the order in which you’d like to do these:

-keep the pitches, apply new rhythms

-keep the rhythms, apply new pitches

You now have a theme with two basic variations. Find two other ways in which you could vary your theme.

Expansion: harmonize your melodic materials and score for an ensemble of your choosing.
