Using a sheet of regular blank paper, design a “sound landscape” for chamber orchestra.
You must not resort to traditional music notation.
Words may be used, but only sparingly. Use mostly lines, shapes, drawings, and colors to depict the sorts of sounds you want. Obviously much will be left to the imagination of the ensemble.
Plan ahead how you will depict texture, dynamics, relative pitch level, and rhythmic activity. Decide large scale formal areas–how will the “drama” ebb and flow? How will you steer what could be nonsensical cacophony into a meaningful experience for both performer and listener?
